Responsibilities:

We require a Principal Technical Safety Engineer to part of our energetic, expanding team, and will be expected to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues on multiple projects in a supportive, progressive environment.

This permanent position would be based preferably at our Warrington office, but our other office locations will also be considered. The role may involve some occasional travel within the UK and world-wide locations to meet project requirements.

This varied and challenging role will help drive forward Risktec’s risk management consulting services, with your focus in two key areas:

• Technical safety project work and consultancy for external clients; and
• Maintenance and development of internal software packages supporting consultancy services.

You will maintain, develop and use internal software relating to our risk modelling capabilities, supporting consultancy projects across the company. This will include routine development of our existing internal tools, as well as ad-hoc support to other consultants where automated software solutions are required. Tasks may include scripting of simulation data analyses, 3D and mathematical modelling, process automation and development of bespoke risk modelling software solutions based on specific client requests. To fulfil this responsibility, applicants should be experienced in both front-end and back-end development languages, frameworks and third-party libraries.
You will be the driving force behind the software maintenance/ development programme – leading, managing and implementing it – assisted by Directors, subject matter experts and consultants.

Requirements:
Applicants should have a relevant science or engineering degree, and possess strong analytical thinking, numerical, written and verbal communication skills.

The candidate must have a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in some of the following areas:

• QRA and other technical safety studies (BRA, EERA, ESSA, FERA, Facility Siting Studies, etc.)
• Consequence and physical effects modelling
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
• Fire and Gas Mapping
• Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) studies
• Experience in the use of software packages such as SAFETI, PHAST, FRED, SHEPHERD, FLACS, FDS, Reliability/ Availability Workbench

Experience:
Due to the varied nature of the role, candidates must have a broad experience base, with the ability to select the optimum technology for a particular problem. To this end, the candidate must have some experience in several of the following areas:

• Full stack development
• Python (and associated data analysis libraries such as Numpy and Pandas)
• C#, .NET, and JavaScript/Typescript
• Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
• Linux, including bash scripting
• Git

Experience in the following areas are desirable:

• Cloud technologies
• Data analysis and mathematical modelling
• 3D modelling and data visualisation
• Development of software solutions in a technical safety and risk management environment is also desirable

Your software development role responsibilities will include:

• Contributing towards and developing Risktec’s software quality processes and implementing good practice in software development (e.g. test-driven development, self-documenting and maintainable code).
• Liaising with internal and external users to gather feedback that will drive future phases of development for existing and new software products.
• Developing our existing suite of tools and software solutions as required by our clients and subject matter experts.
• Writing high-quality, tested and maintainable code.
• Developing and maintaining client-side and server-side architecture.
• Demonstrating new features both internally and to end-users.
• Contributing to the strategic technical direction of the products.
