Applying the circular economy to offshore wind

Our consultants are actively engaged in and leading the sector in identifying and addressing waste and resource management challenges. This includes sharing learning across the sector from oil and gas decommissioning to offshore wind development.

Our  service offering has been developed through successful delivery of projects from the planning stage through to decommissioning.

Circular economy considerations

A circular economy is one in which products and materials are kept in use for as long as possible, reducing the amount of resulting waste. To apply circular economy principles to offshore wind developments requires planning for the end at the beginning. This requires considerations at various life cycle stages, including the following:

Design stage

Considering the materials to be used and the engineering design and installation methods to be applied. Will they enable repair and refurbishment during the lifetime of the asset and its component parts? Will the design and installation methodology enable removal for reuse and recycling? If not, what changes can be made?

Operations

Prioritising repair and refurbishment of component parts over disposal and replacement with new ones. Robust record keeping of maintenance, repair/changes made to the assets and their component parts to inform future reuse potential.

End of life

Identifying component parts that can be used in situ for repowering. Identifying those that can be reused elsewhere either for their original, intended use or for another use. Ensuring that wherever possible, components are sent for repair and refurbishment to ensure their life is extended and where that is not possible, that recycling takes precedence over disposal.

Our experience and expertise

Capability

  • Understanding of materials management roles & responsibilities throughout the lifecycle of a development, including contractual ownership versus waste Duty of Care.
  • Understanding of materials management for both onshore and offshore elements of a development
  • Development and implementation of Materials Management Strategies tailored to individual project requirements during the development’s life cycle   phases. This can include input into the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) at the design phase, and support throughout the decommissioning phase
  • Development of project materials management targets and construction and/or decommissioning contract scopes of work with regard to materials management
  • Assurance assessment of materials management contractors
  • Materials management reporting

Materials Management Strategies (MMS)

Risktec’s Offshore Wind Materials Management Strategies (MMSs) are tailored to be project specific, supporting the project team during the relevant lifecycle phase.

The MMS forms the materials management route map for the project, identifying the materials management considerations and actions relevant to each lifecycle phase, guiding and supporting the project teams in designing, operating and decommissioning offshore wind developments aligned to the principles of the circular economy.

The MMS is not only applicable to the actual wind farm structures and foundations/anchors, but can apply to wastes arising during construction and decommissioning, including dredged materials and ancillary items, e.g. concrete mattresses.

Similarly, the MMS can be applied to the onshore elements of offshore wind developments during both construction and decommissioning.
