HAZOP Leader (TÜV)
ID No: 0000080430
This HAZOP Leader (TÜV) course is the only training for HAZOP leaders worldwide that is certified by an accredited body. It will develop and test the delegates’ knowledge, skills and behaviours for the effective leadership of process safety related HAZOP workshops. The course covers the fundamentals of HAZOP leadership, demonstrating how to apply the theory in practical situations and using real-world examples to illustrate key points.
Certification details:
PerCert TÜV
Personnel certification is a certificate issued by the accredited and independent body PersCert TÜV.
PersCert TÜV meets international standard ISO 17024 when testing technical and professional skills. For more information visit www.certipedia.com/quality_marks/0000080430
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate mature evaluation of the HAZOP technique against the wider safety context, including the regulatory environment and other safety methods
- Apply multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge to lead and challenge the HAZOP study team
- Assess the importance of human factors to a successful HAZOP study in context of the design and operation of process facilities
- Devise and manage a HAZOP meeting, demonstrating a comprehensive and rounded application of different skills and capabilities to lead both technically and professionally

Who should attend?
- Anyone with 5 years’ experience of the HAZOP technique who is required to lead HAZOP studies.
- Highly experienced HAZOP leaders seeking an internationally recognised certification.
The training is not industry-specific, however the exercises and worked examples are based on process safety hazards associated with oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical industries.
What prior study is recommended?
The following requirements must be met for candidates to attain the HAZOP Leader (TÜV):
- a minimum of 5 years’ experience in HAZOP (HAZOP team member, HAZOP scribe, HAZOP facilitator)
- university degree (master’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering or science discipline) or equivalent engineer level responsibilities with status certified by employer
- attendance on the course
- successful completion of continuous assessment
- successful completion of the examination
On meeting these requirements, candidates will be issued with a PersCert TÜV certificate from TÜV Rheinland. The certificate is valid for 5 years.
Steve Forster
BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering, Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist, MIChemE, FSEng (SIS) TÜV Rheinland
Steve has over 30 years’ experience in hazard and risk assessment, fire, explosion and toxic gas hazard analysis, with extensive experience in safety and risk issues in the oil, gas, chemical and renewables industries.
He has facilitated HAZID, HAZOP & LOPA workshops worldwide across a broad range of industries and technologies including: onshore and offshore oil and gas; chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture; aero engine and subsea robotic systems; wind turbine, carbon sequestration and green hydrogen production systems.
He also undertakes many other specialised safety studies including: development of models and methodologies for complex hazard scenarios; quantified risk assessments (QRA); bow-tie, failure mode effect analysis (FMEA); safety and environmentally critical element (SECE); performance standard (PS) and ‘as low as reasonably practicable’ (ALARP) workshop facilitation.
Alongside all of this, he has acted as a member of the technical steering team for commercial hazard analysis software development, provided expert affidavits on land use planning issues for judicial reviews and represented clients in discussions with government ministers and regulating bodies.
Ahmer Kamal
Chemical Engineering, AMIChemE, Technis Certified Functional Safety Engineer
Ahmer is a Principal Consultant with 11+ years’ design and engineering experience working within various industry sectors including manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceutical, oil & gas and water. Over the past 11 years Ahmer has worked mainly in the process safety fields, either as part of a larger project team or on a consultancy basis.
He is a Technis certified Functional Safety Engineer and delivers training for all process safety topics.
Ahmer has worked across many industry sectors conducting over 100 Hazard Analysis studies and LOPA studies as well as bowtie analysis, FMEA / FMECA studies, consequence modelling, QRA, safety case development and reviews, gap analysis and SIL verification of over 5,000 SIFs. Ahmer also undertakes many specialised safety studies including, understanding of methodologies for complex hazard scenarios, hazard identification (HAZID), bow-tie, layer of protection analysis (LOPA), hazard and operability (HAZOP), safety integrity level (SIL) and studies supporting the full functional safety lifecycle, and ‘as low as reasonably practicable’ (ALARP) workshop facilitation.
How is it assessed?
Candidates must have successfully demonstrated their leadership skills during the course’s activity-based continuous assessment to be eligible for the written examination.
The examination has a duration of 4 hours and comprises two parts, taken on separate days:
